Can you believe it is almost 2024? I can’t. But here we go. I hope the festivities of the season have nourished your being. And I thank you for being here with me. I truly am grateful for you. Christopher and I have been surrounded by trees and the Salish Sea for the last few days which has been the perfect place for me to think about the year ahead.
I used to be a resolution kind of girl but over the years that has morphed into something else. I remember when my children were small all I wanted was a clean house so these last days of the year it was out with the old and I engaged the whole family in a sorting, scrubbing, and dusting frenzy. The reward at the end was marching through the house chasing out any lingering “spirits” by making as much noise as possible. My stockpot’s thick stainless steel lid still bears the dents caused by a particularly enthusiastic young reveler with a wooden spoon.
Now, while I do plenty of reflecting and planning right now as I do love moving into new wall and desk calendars. I also spread the hopes and dreams portion out. I check in with myself seasonally instead of loading everything into the turning of the calendar.
I know for myself things that I love and/or make me feel great still manage to fall off my routine. I am looking at you yoga!
Yoga makes me feel great and yet when I stop for a week or so, it is so hard to get my mind around just unrolling the mat. While I obviously have no advice to help with yoga, I do think it is the same with a regular fermentation habit. I can help there. A few years ago I created this little fermentation challenge as a fun way to kick-start or restart your fermentation habit/practice/lifestyle — because enjoying these foods does just that becomes part of a delicious and healthy lifestyle.
it is all about building habits or programming our brains to think of adding ferments when we reach into the fridge.
This 30-day challenge is all about learning simple tricks to include ferments in the types of foods that you might eat already. The idea is that if you get ideas that help you intuitively add ferments to meals while building that habit, you too can eat ferments regularly without even realizing it. This course helps you incorporate fermentation into your daily diet for a whole 30 days. Recipes and shopping list provided.
Because this should be easy, with no pressure, during the challenge it is your choice to simply buy the ferments that are used in the recipes, or make them. I have set it up so that you will be eating and making very simple ferments like fermented breakfast oats. In the end, I hope you have a few new favorites that become part of your diet. The idea is low stress and high flavor!
This year the January cohort will have extra support from yours truly as The Fermentation School now has a new free app available in the Apple App Store or Google Play. (Just search on The Fermentation School) Anyone can access the app for free and join our free support community. Within this space, there is a place for Challenge Cohorts to communicate with each other as well as ask me any questions. I am excited to add this feature to the challenge.

One more announcement—In person multi-day workshop
I have been enjoying hanging out with our 18-month granddaughter but one small work thing that happened is I finalized a multi-day workshop on Cortes Island at Hollyhock Retreat in Canada in early October. I am stoked about this one as the Hollyhock staff and I have designed a Fermentation of Place workshop in which we will explore the local bioregion and Hollyhock’s orchards and garden to build our ferments. This means we will be working with sea vegetables and harvesting our own salt. I am in love with the Salish Sea and am looking forward to this fermentation playground.
Fermentation by the sea sounds like a huge health boost!
